Semrush and Ahrefs Alternatives That Cost Less in 2026

Most sites don't need a $129-$139 a month SEO suite. Compare cheaper Semrush and Ahrefs alternatives job by job, with prices checked on each vendor's page in October 2026, a yearly cost example and a decision table.

The right Semrush alternative for most small teams is not another all-in-one suite but a cheaper tool for each job you actually do: free Google tools for search data, a focused rank tracker, a keyword research and writing tool, and an AI visibility check. Keep Semrush or Ahrefs if you research backlinks and competitor traffic every week.

Disclosure: RankTera publishes this guide and is one of the tools in it. Every other price comes from the vendor's official pages, checked on 15 October 2026; confirm before you buy.

Key takeaways

  • Semrush (from $139/mo) and Ahrefs (Lite, $129/mo) are built around backlink, site audit and competitor traffic data. If you rarely open those reports, you're paying for databases you don't use.
  • Google Search Console, Google Keyword Planner and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools cover your own site's queries, search volumes, backlinks and technical issues for free.
  • Lower-cost suites such as Mangools (from $30.50/mo) and Moz Pro (from $49/mo) keep backlink data in the bundle; SE Ranking costs about the same as Ahrefs Lite but includes 2,000 daily keywords.
  • A focused stack for rank tracking, AI citations, keyword research and writing can cost $38 a month, as the worked example shows.
  • RankTera has no backlink analysis, site audits, traffic estimates or search volumes; pair it with the free Google tools, or keep a suite if you need those daily.

Do you actually need Semrush or Ahrefs?

You need Semrush or Ahrefs if your work depends on data about other people's websites: who links to your competitors, how much traffic their pages get, and which keywords they rank for. If your work is mostly about your own site, cheaper tools cover it.

Both suites are built around very large crawled databases. Ahrefs' Site Explorer page lists 35 trillion live backlinks, and Semrush's features page groups competitor analysis (traffic sources, rankings, ads), backlink analysis, a technical site audit, keyword research, rank tracking, content creation and AI visibility in one product. That is good value for link builders, agencies that audit and pitch many sites, large sites with deep technical audits, and teams that combine SEO with PPC research.

If you only track rankings, research keywords and publish articles, the cheaper alternative to Semrush is one affordable SEO tool per job, at a fraction of a suite's price. Know what you give up: RankTera, for example, does rank tracking, AI visibility, keyword research and AI writing, but has no backlink analysis, site audits, traffic estimates or search volumes. If those are weekly tasks, a suite is the better buy.

Why are Semrush and Ahrefs so expensive?

Semrush and Ahrefs are expensive because you pay for the upkeep of their keyword and backlink databases, not only the software, and seats cost extra. As of October 2026, an extra Semrush user is an add-on "starting at $45/mo" (Semrush pricing), and Ahrefs Lite includes one user, with up to two more at $40/mo each (Ahrefs pricing). A three-person team on Ahrefs Lite pays $209 a month before any add-ons.

Which SEO jobs need a full suite?

Most SEO work splits into seven jobs, and only the last two or three really need a suite. The table maps each job to a free option and focused paid options.

Jobs that need data about your own site or the current results page are cheap; jobs that need a crawl of the whole web are where suites earn their price.

Rank tracking without a full suite

For rank tracking alone, start with Google Search Console and add a focused tracker for the keywords that matter commercially.

Google Search Console is free and based on real searches: the Performance report shows clicks, impressions, CTR and "the average position of the topmost result from your site". But that average blends many searches, and Google notes that results "are specific to the time, place, device, and recent history of the person searching." A rank tracker checks the same way every time.

Focused options, as of October 2026:

  • RankTera tracks your Google desktop position (top 50) in any of 199 countries, weekly from $19/mo or daily from $29/mo for 300 keywords, and checks ChatGPT and Gemini citations for every tracked keyword once a week. It doesn't track mobile, cities, local packs or SERP features.
  • Mangools SERPWatcher tracks 200 keywords weekly on Basic ($30.50/mo, Mangools pricing), with "both desktop & mobile search results" and city-level locations (SERPWatcher). Daily updates start on Agency ($70.50/mo).
  • SE Ranking Core ($129/mo) tracks 2,000 keywords a day, at a lower cost per keyword than Semrush or Ahrefs (SE Ranking pricing).

For mobile and local trackers, see our best rank tracker tools comparison; our rank tracker guide covers setup.

Keyword research without Semrush

Keyword research without Semrush works well if you split it in two: get search volumes from Google Keyword Planner for free, then study what the top-ranking pages cover with a cheaper tool.

Google calls Keyword Planner "a free resource to help advertisers build keyword lists for search campaigns" (Google Ads). Its "Avg. monthly searches" figure is averaged over 12 months and rounded (Keyword Planner historical metrics), which is enough to compare keywords. To use it, "you must complete your account setup by entering your billing information" (Use Keyword Planner).

Paid options with their own keyword databases, as of October 2026:

  • Mangools KWFinder: 100 keyword lookups per 24 hours on Basic, 500 on Premium ($40.50/mo).
  • Moz Pro: 150 keyword queries a month on Standard ($99/mo), 5,000 on Medium ($179/mo), per Moz's pricing page.
  • Ubersuggest: 20,000 keyword suggestions a month on Individual and 50,000 on Business, per Ubersuggest's pricing page.

RankTera's KW Research does a different part of the job: for a keyword and country, it reads the top Google pages (you pick up to 5), extracts the phrases they use under their headings with their average count, and shows the pages' average word count. It has no search volumes, so pair it with Keyword Planner. Our keyword research guide covers the full process.

Content writing and optimization on a budget

For content, the cheaper path is a tool that turns keyword research into a draft and checks it against the pages that already rank. Options as of October 2026:

  • RankTera AI Writer writes a full article from the KW Research keywords, in one click or with your own style, outline and length, and scores it 0-100 for structure and keyword coverage. Writer Starter costs $19/mo for 50 AI articles or optimizations and 50 keyword researches.
  • Ubersuggest includes 2 AI articles a month on Individual and 5 on Business.
  • SE Ranking includes 25 content articles on Core, with extra articles from $39.20.
  • Ahrefs lists a Content Kit (AI Content Helper, Content Grader) from $99/mo, marked "Soon" on its pricing page.

Whichever tool drafts the article, a person still adds the experience and examples that make it worth ranking; our on-page SEO checklist covers what to review before you publish.

How do you track AI search visibility cheaply?

Track AI search visibility in two places: Google's own report for AI Overviews and AI Mode, which is free, and a tool that checks whether ChatGPT and Gemini cite your site for your keywords.

Ranking well doesn't guarantee an AI citation. In Ahrefs' March 2026 study of 863,000 keyword results pages, only 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared in the top 10 for the query.

The free option is Search Console's Generative AI performance report, rolled out to all sites as of August 31, 2026. It shows AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions by page, country, date and device, but has no query dimension and doesn't cover ChatGPT or Gemini.

Ahrefs also sells a $29/mo Starter plan, renewed monthly only, with 50 tracked keywords (Ahrefs' Starter plan overview). Ubersuggest shows prices by visitor location, so we list its limits instead of one price. RankTera's yearly plans cost 10 times the monthly price (RankTera pricing).

Free alternatives to Semrush and Ahrefs

For your own site, three free tools replace a large share of a paid suite:

  1. Google Search Console: queries, positions, indexing, and a Links report with top linking sites, top linked pages and anchor text. Google notes it "shows a sample of internal and external links".
  2. Google Keyword Planner: keyword ideas and monthly search estimates.
  3. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools: free on verified sites, with a Site Audit for "170+ common technical & on-page SEO issues" and Site Explorer showing up to 1K backlinks at once (Ahrefs Webmaster Tools).

Semrush's free plan (1 demo project, 10 reports a day) covers an occasional competitor check. None of these researches competitors' backlinks and traffic at scale; that is the job you pay a suite for.

Worked example: a $38 stack versus a $139 suite

This example is illustrative; prices are from vendor pages as of October 2026. A small online store with one site wants to track 250 keywords in the United States weekly, publish about eight articles a month, know whether ChatGPT and Gemini cite it, and check its own backlinks now and then. It almost never researches competitors' backlinks.

What the stack covers. Search Console and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools handle the store's own queries, backlinks and technical checks; Keyword Planner supplies volumes. RankTera tracks 300 keywords weekly with ChatGPT and Gemini citation checks, plus 50 keyword researches and 50 AI articles a month.

The saving. Compared with Semrush SEO on monthly billing, the stack saves $1,212 a year ($1,668 minus $456). Mangools Premium saves almost as much ($1,182) and keeps competitor backlink data and mobile tracking, but it doesn't write articles.

The decision. If the store's buyers search mostly on mobile, or it starts link building, Mangools Premium or SE Ranking fits better. If writing and AI citations are the priority and desktop data is representative, the focused stack fits. If competitor research becomes weekly work, moving up to Semrush or Ahrefs is a reasonable next step.

What we found: how the top "semrush alternative" pages are built

On 15 October 2026 we analysed the top Google results for "semrush alternative". Our SERP analysis put the median length of the top-ranking pages at 2,545 words. Of the six pages we profiled, four had an FAQ section and only two used a table; most were lists of 7 to 13 tools ranked one after another.

We also ran semrush alternative through RankTera's KW Research (US results, 15 October 2026). The five top-ranking pages it analysed (seranking.com, onelittleweb.com, mangools.com, trafficthinktank.com and chatseo.app) averaged 4,620 words, and the tool extracted 82 keywords from their headings. The most-used terms were:

Frequently asked questions

Which company owns Semrush?

Adobe owns Semrush. Adobe announced the all-cash deal on November 19, 2025, at $12.00 per share, or about $1.9 billion in equity value (Adobe news release), and announced the completion of its acquisition of Semrush Holdings, Inc. on April 28, 2026 (completion announcement). Semrush now describes itself as "an Adobe company" and keeps its own brand.

Is there a free Semrush alternative?

No single free tool replaces Semrush, but a free combination covers most of a small site's needs: Search Console for queries, positions and links, Keyword Planner for volumes, and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for an audit and your own backlinks. Semrush also has a free plan (10 reports a day) and a 7-day trial.

What is the cheapest Ahrefs alternative?

For your own site, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free and comes from Ahrefs itself. For competitor backlinks on a budget, Mangools Basic costs $30.50 a month with 100,000 backlink rows a month, and Moz Pro Standard costs $99 with 5,000 backlink queries a month, as of October 2026. Ahrefs' own Starter plan ($29/mo) is another low-cost route. Index size and freshness differ by vendor, so test with your own competitors first.

Is Ubersuggest a good alternative to Semrush?

Ubersuggest is a reasonable low-cost alternative for one or a few sites: its plans include keyword research, weekly rank tracking, a site audit, backlink data, AI prompt tracking and a few AI articles a month. Its limits are smaller than Semrush's (125 tracked keywords per project on Individual, against 500 on Semrush SEO), and prices vary by country, so compare the plan shown for your location.

Is there an open-source alternative to Semrush?

We know of no open-source project that replicates Semrush's keyword and backlink databases, because the expensive part is crawling and storing the web, not the software. The practical free route is Google's own tools plus Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, which give accurate data for sites you own.

Will AI search replace SEO?

AI search is changing where people find answers, but it relies on the pages SEO produces. Google says there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode" beyond normal Search eligibility (AI features and your website). So keep doing SEO, and track both your Google positions and whether AI assistants cite you.

Track rankings and AI citations without paying for a suite

The right Semrush alternative is the cheapest set of tools that covers the jobs you actually do, plus the free Google tools for everything about your own site. If your jobs are rank tracking, AI visibility, keyword research and writing, RankTera covers them in two plans, with Google positions and ChatGPT and Gemini citations in one table. Start your 14-day free tier — no card needed: Rank Starter with 300 keywords and Writer Starter with 3 AI articles and 3 keyword researches, and nothing is charged when it ends.
