The best rank tracker is the one that checks the searches your customers actually make (the right device, location and search engine) often enough, at a price you can keep paying. As of October 2026, Google Search Console, Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, AccuRanker, Nightwatch, Mangools SERPWatcher and RankTera each lead on a different criterion.
Disclosure: RankTera publishes this guide and is one of the eight tools. Every competitor figure comes from that vendor's official pages, checked on 15 October 2026, and RankTera's limits are listed as plainly as the others'.
Key takeaways
- Decide on devices, locations and update frequency first; price per keyword only matters among tools that meet those needs.
- Google Search Console is free and based on real searches, but it reports an average position, not a fixed daily rank.
- For mobile, city or ZIP-level tracking, shortlist Semrush, SE Ranking, Nightwatch, AccuRanker, Ahrefs or Mangools; RankTera is desktop and country-level only.
- Weekly updates suit most content sites; daily updates suit launches, migrations, volatile niches and client reporting.
- Most tools now track AI search, but usually as a separate prompt quota, so check what is counted, on which engines and how often.
What does a rank tracker do?
A rank tracker is software that searches your keywords on a schedule from a set country (often also a city and device), finds where your site appears, and stores each position so you can see changes over time. Better rank tracking tools also show who outranks you and which result types fill the page.
Rank tracking answers questions a one-off search can't, such as whether the last core update moved you or which pages slipped after a redesign. Searching your own keywords by hand is unreliable because results are personal: Google's Performance report documentation says search results "are specific to the time, place, device, and recent history of the person searching." A tracker removes that noise by checking the same way every time. Our rank tracker guide covers setup and the core metrics in more depth.
How is a rank tracker different from Google Search Console?
Google Search Console shows what really happened in Google: clicks, impressions and an average position across all the searches where your site appeared. A rank tracker shows a controlled snapshot: the position of one keyword, in one location, on one device, on a given day.
Google's explanation of the position metric says Search Console averages your topmost position over all impressions, and that a link which never gets an impression (say, on page 3 when the user only viewed page 1) gets no position recorded. So a keyword where you sit at position 35 may be missing from Search Console, while a tracker records it on every check. Most teams use both: Search Console for real traffic, a tracker for the keywords they've chosen to watch.
How we compared these rank tracking tools
We compared published specifications, not our own accuracy tests. On 15 October 2026 we opened every vendor's official pricing and feature pages and recorded the same criteria: entry price on monthly billing, keywords included, update frequency, devices, location depth, search engines, AI search tracking, competitor and SERP-feature tracking, and the free plan or trial. Where a page didn't state something, we say so. Prices change often, so confirm on the vendor's page before you buy.

Google Search Console: the free baseline
Google Search Console is the best free rank tracker to start with because it reports the positions your pages earned in real searches. It is not a rank tracker in the strict sense, though.
What you get. The Performance report shows clicks, impressions, CTR and average position, which you can group by query, page, country, device, search appearance and date. Search Console keeps data for the last 16 months, according to Google's help page on the Search Console integration. Google's AI features documentation says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is "included in the overall search traffic in Search Console," reported within the Web search type.
Limits. Average position blends many searches, locations and devices into one number. Keywords where users never see your result have no position. There is no competitor view. The Generative AI performance report (all sites since August 31, 2026) shows AI Overview and AI Mode impressions by page, country, device and date, but not by query.
Good fit for: every site, as the baseline. Connect it before you pay for anything else.
Semrush Position Tracking: rank tracking inside a full SEO suite
Semrush Position Tracking is the rank tracker inside Semrush's SEO suite, sold with keyword research, site audits and backlink tools in one subscription.
What stands out. The Position Tracking page lists daily updates, "mobile and desktop splits", ZIP-code-level local data, tracking of featured snippets, AI Overviews and local packs, up to 20 competitors, and prompt tracking in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini.
Pricing as of October 2026. Per Semrush's pricing page, the SEO plan costs $139/mo ($117.33/mo billed annually) with 500 keywords tracked daily. Starter costs $199/mo with 500 keywords plus 50 daily AI visibility prompts. Pro+ costs $299/mo with 1,500 keywords and "multi-location/device tracking". There is a free plan (1 demo project, 10 reports a day) and a 7-day trial.
Limits. If rank tracking is all you need, the SEO plan works out at $278 per 1,000 keywords, the highest of the daily trackers' entry plans here. Multi-location and multi-device tracking start at Pro+.
Good fit for: teams that will also use the rest of the suite, so the tracker is effectively bundled in.
Ahrefs Rank Tracker: weekly tracking with deep SERP data
Ahrefs Rank Tracker tracks mobile and desktop rankings from country down to ZIP code with deep SERP-feature data, and updates weekly by default.
What stands out. The Rank Tracker page lists "Mobile and desktop tracking", locations "from country, to city, to ZIP code", "19 SERP features. Including AI Overviews", a SERP history chart and competitor comparison. AI chatbot visibility sits in Ahrefs' Brand Radar. On frequency, Ahrefs' help center states: "With all subscription plans, the default update frequency for the tracked keywords in Rank Tracker is weekly."
Pricing as of October 2026. Per Ahrefs' pricing page, Lite costs $129/mo with 750 tracked keywords and 5 tracked AI prompts, Standard $249/mo with 2,000 keywords, and Advanced $449/mo with 5,000 keywords, all listed with weekly Rank Tracker updates. Annual billing saves "up to 17%". A $29/mo Starter plan, renewed monthly only, includes Rank Tracker with 50 keywords (Ahrefs' Starter plan overview).
Limits. Weekly data by default, 50 keywords on Starter and a small AI prompt allowance on Lite.
Good fit for: SEOs who already rely on Ahrefs for backlinks and content research and are happy with weekly rank data.
SE Ranking: daily, local and AI tracking at a mid-range price
SE Ranking combines daily, local and AI search tracking at one of the lowest costs per keyword among the daily trackers here.
What stands out. The rank tracker page lists daily positions across the top 100 on Google, Bing, Yahoo and YouTube, desktop and mobile rankings, any "city, region, or ZIP code", 35+ SERP features, AI tracking across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity, and unlimited automated reports.
Pricing as of October 2026. Per SE Ranking's pricing page, Core costs $129/mo ($103.20/mo billed annually) with 2,000 keywords and 100 AI prompts tracked daily across 5 LLMs. Growth costs $279/mo with 5,000 keywords and 250 prompts. An AI Search add-on starting at $89/mo adds more prompts. The free trial lasts 14 days and needs no credit card.
Limits. The entry plan is sized for 2,000 keywords, which is more than a small site with 100 keywords needs to pay for. Heavy AI tracking requires the add-on.
Good fit for: agencies and in-house teams that want daily, local and AI data without enterprise pricing.
AccuRanker: high-volume daily tracking with manual refresh
AccuRanker is a dedicated rank tracker built for large keyword sets and fresh data.
What stands out. AccuRanker's help center says keywords "are automatically updated every 24 hours", and you can refresh one keyword or the whole list by hand unless it was updated less than two hours earlier (keyword updates). Its adding keywords guide lists Google, Bing, Baidu and YouTube on desktop and mobile, locations from country down to an exact address, and notes that each keyword counts once per locale, engine, device and location.
Pricing as of October 2026. Per AccuRanker's pricing page, Professional costs $249/mo for 2,000 keywords ($224/mo billed yearly) and Expert $849/mo for 10,000 keywords and up ($764/mo yearly), reflecting 10% off for annual payment. AI search tracking is a separate product, AccuLLM, from $229/mo ($206/mo yearly) for 100 prompts tracked daily across ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode; the AccuLLM page adds a sentiment score from 1 to 100.
Limits. The highest entry price among the dedicated trackers here, and AI visibility costs extra.
Good fit for: agencies and enterprise teams tracking thousands of keywords that need fresh data on demand.
Nightwatch: local, multi-engine and multi-device tracking
Nightwatch tracks every keyword daily across Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, YouTube and Google Maps, on desktop, mobile and tablet, with AI tracking in every plan.
What stands out. The rank tracker page lists 107,000+ locations down to ZIP codes, local pack tracking, updates "every 24 hours" with on-demand refreshes, AI visibility across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and white-labelled reports sent by email.
Pricing as of October 2026. Per Nightwatch's pricing page, prices are in euros. Starter costs €99/mo (€79/mo billed yearly) with 500 keywords and 50 AI prompts. Professional costs €199/mo (€159/mo yearly) with 2,500 keywords and 150 prompts. Agency costs €499/mo (€399/mo yearly) with 7,500 keywords and 500 prompts. Every plan covers six AI platforms (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Mode and AI Overview) and includes keyword research, a site audit and on-demand checks; white-label reports and unlimited user seats start at Professional. There is a 14-day trial with no card required.
Limits. 500 keywords on the entry plan, white-label reports only from Professional, and euro billing.
Good fit for: local businesses, multi-location brands and agencies that report to clients.
Mangools SERPWatcher: low-cost tracking with mobile and city data
SERPWatcher is the rank tracker in the Mangools bundle, alongside KWFinder, SERPChecker, LinkMiner and SiteProfiler, and is one of the cheapest ways here to track mobile and city-level rankings.
What stands out. The SERPWatcher page says "Both desktop & mobile search results are supported", lists more than 65,000 locations including cities and DMA regions, and promises "weekly rank updates (daily on the Agency plan)".
Pricing as of October 2026. Per Mangools' pricing page, Basic costs $30.50/mo ($18.85/mo billed annually) for 200 keywords updated weekly, Premium $40.50/mo ($26.35/mo annually) for 700 weekly keywords, and Agency $70.50/mo ($48.85/mo annually) for 1,500 keywords updated daily. Every plan lists AI Search Watcher PRO (500 monitored prompts) as included, and there is a 48-hour money-back guarantee.
Limits. Daily updates only on Agency, and 200 keywords on Basic.
Good fit for: freelancers, bloggers and small sites that want keyword research and tracking in one low-cost bundle.
RankTera: Google ranks and AI citations at a low entry price
RankTera tracks your Google desktop position (top 50) for each keyword daily or weekly, depending on plan, in any of 199 countries, and once a week checks whether ChatGPT and Gemini cite your domain for that same keyword, on every plan, with no add-on.
What you get. A rank table with change, Best Rank and Last Update, rank-range and average-position widgets, keyword collections and Excel export. Each keyword has SERP Details (the Google top 10, or the results around your position) and a rank history. Scan Website for Keywords reads your sitemap and suggests keywords per page. You can compare up to 3 auto-discovered competitors keyword by keyword. For AI visibility, RankTera records Mentioned or Not mentioned per engine, with up to 10 cited source URLs.
Pricing as of October 2026. Rank Starter costs $19/mo (weekly) or $29/mo (daily) for 300 keywords; Rank Pro Plus $49/mo or $89/mo for 1,500; Rank Agency $89/mo or $149/mo for 3,000; Rank Enterprise $149/mo or $599/mo for 12,000. Yearly billing costs 10 times the monthly price (RankTera pricing).
Limits. Desktop only, country-level only (no city, ZIP or local pack), Google only, positions up to 50. No SERP-feature detection, manual re-checks, scheduled or white-label reports, backlinks, site audits or search volumes. AI checks are weekly and cover two engines, not Perplexity or AI Overviews.
Good fit for: small businesses, content sites and SaaS teams with a mainly desktop audience that track at country level and want AI citation checks without a separate prompt quota.
How much does a rank tracker cost per 1,000 keywords?
At entry level, as of October 2026, paid plans range from about $63 to $580 per 1,000 tracked keywords a month, and Search Console is free. Dividing each entry plan's price by its keyword allowance makes the plans easier to compare:
Tool and plan (monthly billing) | Price | Keywords | Updates | Cost per 1,000 keywords a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Ahrefs Starter | $29 | 50 | Weekly | $580 |
Semrush SEO | $139 | 500 | Daily | $278 |
Nightwatch Starter | €99 | 500 | Daily | €198 |
Ahrefs Lite | $129 | 750 | Weekly | $172 |
Mangools Basic | $30.50 | 200 | Weekly | $153 |
AccuRanker Professional | $249 | 2,000 | Daily | $125 |
RankTera Rank Starter (daily) | $29 | 300 | Daily | $97 |
SE Ranking Core | $129 | 2,000 | Daily | $65 |
RankTera Rank Starter (weekly) | $19 | 300 | Weekly | $63 |
Three caveats apply. Suites such as Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Nightwatch and Mangools include other tools in the price, so cost per keyword overstates what you pay for tracking alone. Cost per keyword falls on larger plans (Mangools Agency works out at $47 per 1,000 daily keywords, RankTera Rank Pro Plus daily at $59). And check how usage is counted: AccuRanker counts a keyword once per device and location, so desktop plus mobile in two cities is four keywords.
How to choose the best rank tracker for your needs
The best keyword rank tracker for you is found by elimination: rule out the tools that can't track the devices, locations and engines your customers use, then compare update frequency, AI tracking and price among what's left.
If you need… | Shortlist | Why |
|---|---|---|
Real search data at no cost | Google Search Console | Free, based on actual impressions |
Mobile rankings | SE Ranking, Semrush, Ahrefs, Nightwatch, AccuRanker, Mangools | All list mobile tracking; RankTera is desktop only |
City, ZIP or local-pack tracking | Nightwatch, SE Ranking, Semrush, AccuRanker, Ahrefs | ZIP or address-level locations |
Daily data on a small budget | RankTera Rank Starter ($29/mo, desktop), Mangools Agency ($70.50/mo, with mobile) | Lowest daily entry prices in this list |
Thousands of keywords with on-demand refresh | AccuRanker, Nightwatch | Manual or on-demand checks on top of daily updates |
Bing, YouTube or other engines | Nightwatch, SE Ranking, AccuRanker | Multi-engine tracking |
AI visibility across many engines, with sentiment | AccuRanker's AccuLLM, Nightwatch | Four to six AI platforms, sentiment scoring |
Google rank plus ChatGPT and Gemini citations per keyword | RankTera | Same keyword list, no separate prompt quota |
One subscription for the whole SEO workflow | Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking | Research, audits and backlinks included |
Five questions to answer before you start a trial
- What share of your clicks comes from mobile? Check the Devices tab in Search Console. If mobile dominates, a desktop-only tracker misses what most visitors see.
- Do your customers search locally? A plumber or dentist needs city-level positions and local pack tracking; a national software brand usually doesn't.
- How many keywords will you really track? Multiply keywords by locations and devices. Our keyword research guide explains how to build a list worth tracking.
- How fast will you act on a change? If rankings are only reviewed monthly, daily updates buy data nobody reads.
- Who reads the reports? Clients usually expect scheduled, branded reports; an in-house team may only need a shared table and an export.
Worked example: choosing a tracker for 280 keywords on $50 a month
This is an illustrative example with hypothetical numbers. A B2B software company wants to track 280 keywords in the United States. Its Search Console Devices report shows 78% of clicks from desktop. Weekly data is enough except during product launches, it wants to know whether ChatGPT cites its guides, and the budget is $50 a month.
Step 1: remove what doesn't fit. Semrush ($139/mo), SE Ranking ($129/mo), AccuRanker ($249/mo) and Nightwatch (€99/mo) are over budget at entry level. Ahrefs Starter ($29/mo) tracks only 50 keywords and Lite costs $129/mo; Mangools Basic allows only 200 keywords.
Step 2: compare what's left.
Option | Monthly cost | Keywords | Updates | Mobile | AI search |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
RankTera Rank Starter | $19 weekly or $29 daily | 300 | Weekly or daily | No | ChatGPT and Gemini citations per keyword, weekly |
Mangools Premium | $40.50 | 700 | Weekly | Yes | AI Search Watcher, 500 prompts |
Google Search Console | $0 | All queries with impressions | Daily (average position) | Yes | Not separated from Web results |
Step 3: decide. With 78% desktop clicks and a need to check citations for the keywords it ranks for, RankTera Rank Starter fits: daily checks cost $10 more a month, and yearly billing is $190 (weekly) or $290 (daily). If the mobile share were closer to half, Mangools Premium ($316.20 a year billed annually) would be the better buy, because it tracks mobile and allows 700 keywords. Either way, Search Console stays connected for real click data.
A second example: for a dental clinic with three branches, RankTera is not an option. The clinic needs mobile and city-level positions plus local pack visibility, while RankTera tracks desktop results at country level only, so Nightwatch or SE Ranking would make the shortlist.
Do you need AI search tracking in your rank tracker?
You need AI search tracking if your buyers ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI features before they click anything, because a good Google position and being cited in an AI answer are no longer the same thing.
The data supports treating them separately. In Ahrefs' March 2026 study of 863,000 keyword SERPs and 4 million AI Overview URLs, only 37.9% of cited URLs also appeared in the top 10 results for the query; 31.2% ranked 11 to 100 and 31.0% beyond 100. And while Search Console's Generative AI performance report counts AI Overview and AI Mode impressions per page, it has no query breakdown, so it can't tell you which keywords earned a citation — and it covers only Google's AI features, not ChatGPT or Gemini.
When you compare AI tracking, ask three questions:
- What is counted? Most tools meter prompts separately from keywords (5 on Ahrefs Lite, 50 on Semrush Starter and Nightwatch Starter, 100 a day on SE Ranking Core). RankTera checks every tracked keyword instead.
- Which engines? From two (RankTera: ChatGPT and Gemini) to six (Nightwatch adds Claude, Perplexity, AI Mode and AI Overview).
- How often, and what extra data? Several tools check daily and add sentiment or share of voice; RankTera checks weekly and records only citation status plus source URLs.
For what actually earns those citations, see our guide to generative engine optimization.
What we found: how the top "best rank tracker" pages are built
On 15 October 2026 we analysed the top Google results for "best rank tracker" in two ways. Our SERP analysis of six top-ranking pages put their median length at 2,757 words, ranging from 927 to 7,620. Only one of the six had an FAQ section, two used tables at all, and two were published by vendors that placed their own product first.
We also ran best rank tracker through RankTera's KW Research (US results, 15 October 2026). The top-ranking pages it analysed (zapier.com, onelittleweb.com, marketermilk.com, nightwatch.io and seranking.com) averaged 4,351 words, and the tool extracted 89 keywords from their headings. The most-used terms were:
Term | Average count per page |
|---|---|
rank tracker | 15 |
rank tracking | 9 |
rank trackers | 6 |
best rank tracker | 4 |
keyword research | 4 |
keyword tracking | 3 |
rank tracking tool | 3 |
position tracking | 2 |
daily rank tracking | 2 |
keyword volume | 2 |
local tracking | 2 |
competitor tracking | 2 |
The ranking pages emphasise daily, local and competitor tracking, so this guide compares every tool on those points in tables and sets each tool's limits next to its strengths. When you read any "best rank tracker" list, this one included, check who published it and confirm the specs on the vendor's own page.
Why do rank trackers show different positions?
Rank trackers show different positions because each one checks from its own location, device and time of day, and Google's results vary by searcher. None of them is "wrong"; they measure slightly different searches.
Three things explain most gaps: location (country-level versus city-level checks), device (mobile and desktop results often differ) and method (a tracker records one position per check, while Search Console averages over all impressions, so a page ranking 3rd for some searchers and 9th for others might average 5). When numbers disagree, open the tracker's saved SERP snapshot for that day. For quick manual checks without a tool, see how to check your website's ranking on Google.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free rank tracker?
Google Search Console is the best free rank tracker for most sites: it is permanently free and shows average position, clicks and impressions for every query where your site appeared, with 16 months of history. For a fixed position per keyword, use a free trial or tier: RankTera, Nightwatch and SE Ranking offer 14 days, Semrush 7.
How often should you track keyword rankings?
Weekly tracking is enough for most content sites, because single-day movements are mostly noise. Track daily during migrations, redesigns, launches and Google core updates, in volatile niches such as news or e-commerce, or when clients expect daily reporting. Mangools and RankTera both sell weekly plans for less than their daily ones.
Which rank trackers cover mobile and local rankings?
As of October 2026, Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, AccuRanker, Nightwatch and Mangools SERPWatcher all list mobile tracking. Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Nightwatch and AccuRanker list ZIP or address-level locations; Mangools lists city level. RankTera tracks desktop results at country level only, so it doesn't suit local businesses that depend on mobile and map searches.
Can a rank tracker show whether ChatGPT or AI Overviews cite my site?
Many rank trackers can now, with different coverage. Semrush and Ahrefs track AI Overviews as a SERP feature and include a set number of AI prompts on some plans; Nightwatch, SE Ranking and AccuRanker's AccuLLM check prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, AI Mode and more; RankTera checks ChatGPT and Gemini citations weekly for every tracked keyword. Search Console folds AI Overview traffic into its Web totals.
How can I check my website's ranking on Google?
For a quick check, search the keyword in a private browser window and count the results, keeping in mind that results vary by location, device and history. For a reliable picture, use Search Console's Performance report for average positions and a rank tracker for fixed daily or weekly positions in the country or city you sell to.
Track Google rankings and AI citations in one table
Whichever best rank tracker you choose, pick it for the searches your customers make, then keep Search Console connected alongside it. If your audience is mainly desktop and you track at country level, RankTera shows your Google position and whether ChatGPT and Gemini cite you for every keyword in one table. Start your 14-day free tier — no card needed: Rank Starter with 300 keywords, and nothing is charged when it ends.
