To check your website ranking on Google, search the keyword in a private window and count where your page appears, look up its average position in Google Search Console, or run the keyword through a rank checker set to your target country. For keywords you care about, switch to a rank tracker that re-checks them automatically.
Key takeaways
- A manual search is quick but skewed by your location, device and, if you're signed in, your search history.
- Search Console uses Google's own data: your topmost position averaged across every search where you appeared, not a single snapshot.
- A rank checker gives a non-personalized result for a chosen country, one keyword at a time.
- Once you follow more than a handful of keywords or need history, a rank tracker is the reliable option.
What does your Google ranking mean?
Your Google ranking for a keyword is the position of your highest-placed page among the organic results, where 1 is the first result. It only means something with its context: keyword, location, device and date. Ads aren't organic positions, so skip them when you count. In Search Console, a whole AI Overview, carousel or knowledge panel counts as one position shared by every link in it (Search Console Help).
Method 1: Search Google in a private window
A manual search is the fastest check for one keyword, as long as you reduce personalization first.
- Open a private (incognito) window, or sign out of Google.
- Search the exact keyword.
- Count the organic results down to your page, skipping ads.
- Note the position, the ranking URL, the date and the device.
The pitfalls of checking manually
- Personalization. When you're signed in with personalization on, Google can reorder results using your search history; the "Try without" link at the bottom of the results shows the unpersonalized version (Google Search Help).
- Location. Google uses your location even without personalization, so a search from your office shows your city's results, not a customer's elsewhere.
- Device and timing. Google tailors results to mobile or desktop, and ranking changes reach its data centers at different speeds, so the same search can differ by device or minutes later (why results differ).
Use manual checks for spot checks, not for reporting.
Method 2: Find your average position in Google Search Console
Google Search Console shows your site's performance in Google's results from Google's own data, for free, including which keywords you already rank for.
- In Search Console, open Performance, then Search results, and turn on Average position above the chart.
- In the Queries tab, click your keyword, then open the Pages tab to see which page ranks.
- Use + Add filter to narrow by country and device; you can combine both, for example one country on mobile only (advanced filtering).
- Set the date range, for example the last 28 days.
How to read Search Console's average position
Search Console's position is the topmost position your site held in each search, averaged across searches. In Google's example, a site at positions 2, 4 and 6 for one query and 3, 5 and 9 for another counts as 2 and 3, for an average of 2.5. It's an average over every location, device and day in your range, not what one person sees. A position is only recorded when your page got an impression (how position is counted), the newest data can still change for a few hours (Performance report), and you can't see competitors' positions.
Method 3: Use a keyword rank checker
A keyword rank checker (also called a website ranking checker or Google rank checker) is an online tool: you enter your domain, a keyword and a country, and it searches Google from its own servers, without your personalization, and reports your position.
Rank checkers let you check a country you're not in. Limits vary by tool, but as a general rule free versions cap how many checks you can run a day, each check reads only a fixed depth of results (commonly somewhere between the top 20 and the top 100), and nothing is saved as history. A browser extension that reads your own results page still inherits your location and personalization.
Method 4: Track rankings over time with a rank tracker
A rank tracker runs the same check automatically for all your keywords, daily or weekly, and keeps the history, showing when a ranking changed and which page ranked. Our rank tracker guide explains how location, device, depth and frequency shape the numbers, and our comparison of rank tracker tools helps you pick one.
How to do this in RankTera
Add your website, click Add New Query, paste your keywords one per line and pick the country. The first check runs live when you add a keyword, showing its Google position (desktop, top 50); the Origin column shows which of your pages ranks, and SERP Details shows the Google top 10, or the results around you (±5) if you rank lower. Keywords are then re-checked daily or weekly, depending on your plan.
Ways to check website ranking on Google compared
Method | Cost | What you see | Location control | History | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Private search | Free | Your current results | Your own location only | None | A quick look at 1–3 keywords |
Search Console | Free | Average topmost position across all searches | Filter by country and device | Yes, by date range | Finding the keywords you rank for; trends |
Rank checker | Free tier, then paid | One non-personalized result | Choose a country | None | One-off checks in another market |
Rank tracker | Paid, often with a trial | Positions per keyword per check | Fixed per keyword | Yes, every check | Ongoing tracking and reporting |
When should you switch from checking to tracking?
Switch to ongoing tracking when one-off checks stop answering your questions:
- You follow more than about 10 keywords, or check the same ones every week.
- You update content and need to know whether it moved.
- You sell in a country you can't search from, or report rankings to clients.
- A Google update is rolling out. Google suggests waiting at least a full week after a core update completes before analysing your site (core updates).
Worked example: three methods, three numbers
Example (illustrative numbers): a UK shoe retailer checks "running shoes for flat feet" on the same morning.
- Private search from Manchester, desktop: position 4.
- Search Console, last 28 days, all countries and devices: average position 7.3.
- Rank checker set to the UK, desktop: position 6.
None is wrong. The private search reflects one city; Search Console averages 28 days of mobile and desktop searches, some from outside the UK; the checker shows one national desktop result. To report progress, the retailer should use one controlled method, here a tracker set to the UK, and let Search Console confirm the trend.
How to check whether AI search cites your site
Ranking on Google doesn't guarantee an AI citation. In an Ahrefs analysis of 863,000 Google results pages (March 2026), 37.9% of the URLs cited in Google's AI Overviews also appeared among the first 10 results for that keyword. As of October 2026, Search Console's generative AI performance report shows your impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device. For ChatGPT or Gemini, ask your keyword as a question with web search on and check the sources; RankTera runs that check weekly per tracked keyword. See AI search visibility tracking and generative engine optimization.
What we found about ranking checker pages
When we ran check website ranking on google through RankTera's KW Research (US Google results, October 15, 2026), the top pages it analysed averaged 1,034 words; "search results" was their most used term (5 times on average), followed by "Google Search Console", "keyword rankings" and "search volume" (twice each). Our SERP analysis of six top results found five checker tools or browser extensions and one how-to guide; none had an FAQ section and only one used a table. None of their H2 headings explains why a private search, a checker and Search Console give different numbers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check my Google ranking for free?
Use Google Search Console: in the Performance report, turn on Average position and open the Queries tab to see your average position per keyword, filterable by country and device. For a single current result, search in a private window or use a free rank checker set to your target country. RankTera's free tier also tracks up to 300 keywords weekly for 14 days, with no credit card.
How can I see which keywords my website ranks for?
Open the Performance report in Google Search Console and check the Queries tab: it lists the searches that showed your site, with clicks, impressions and average position. To see the keywords for one page, filter by that page first. Google leaves some queries out of the table to protect searchers' privacy (anonymized queries), so the list is never complete.
Why is my website not showing up on Google?
First check whether the page is indexed, using Search Console's URL Inspection tool. "URL is not on Google" means it can't appear in results; fix the issue it reports and click Request indexing (URL Inspection tool). If the page is indexed but you can't find it, it may rank beyond the pages you checked, or for different keywords.
Does Google still use RankBrain?
Yes. RankBrain is listed among Google's current ranking systems. In Google's words, RankBrain is "an AI system that helps us understand how words are related to concepts", so Google can return relevant content even when a page doesn't contain every word of the search (Google's ranking systems guide).
How do I improve my website's ranking on Google?
Start with what Google's SEO Starter Guide puts first: make sure the page is indexed, answer the query better than the pages already ranking, use the words people search with, and write a clear, unique title. Google says there are no secrets that rank a site first automatically, and that some changes take hours to show while others take several months, so measure over weeks.
